Celebrate the romance and magic of cinema with your family and friends in a refreshing open-air setting as we screen some of your favourite and most beloved movie classics in the popular Under the Banyan Tree monthly series.

The films for the month of June are Mon Oncle (My Uncle) and The General.

Venue: Stamford Garden
Admission is FREE!
Mon Oncle (My Uncle)

Friday 25 June 2010, 8:00pm
1958 | France | 110 min | 35mm | PG | Jacques Tati

Jacques Tati, one of cinema’s greatest comedians, reprises his role as the lovable and accident-prone Mr Hulot in the film Mon Oncle, a follow-up to the hugely popular Mr. Hulot’s Holiday. Mon Oncle proves to be equally successful, becoming a big international hit and winner of the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 1958.

In Mon Oncle, Mr Hulot grapples with the absurdities of modern living with hilarious results when he visits his brother-in-law who lives in a futuristic house full of mechanised gadgets. Filled with inventive and delightful sight gags, the nearly dialogue-free film is a comic masterpiece, and at the same time, a sly dig at American-style consumerism and our obsession with modern efficiency.

A joy to watch from beginning to end, the highlight of Mon Oncle is Tati’s playful and distinctive brand of visual humour, which has been a huge influence on the style of comedians from Monty Python to Peter Sellers and Rowan Atkinson.
The General

Saturday 26 June 2010, 8:00pm
1927 | USA | 75 min | 35mm | PG | Buster Keaton, Clyde Bruckman

Combining romance, adventure and breathtaking stunts, The General is silent comedian Buster Keaton’s masterpiece, and a classic that still inspires awe and wonder. Based on a story set during the Civil War, The General stars Keaton as Johnny Gray, a resolute Southern railroad engineer who pursues his beloved locomotive and his sweetheart, Annabelle Lee, when they are captured by Yankee spies.

In some of the most thrilling chase sequences ever committed to film, Keaton goes after the hijackers on a handcar, bicycle, and finally a locomotive, while battling many obstacles, including an errant canon, with calm stoic grace. As with all his films, Keaton performs all his stunts with perfect timing and dexterity.

Made towards the end of the silent era, The General is one of the most expensive films made during the time, featuring hundreds of extras and an actual locomotive falling into a gorge. Although it did poorly at the box office when it was first released, it is considered by critics as one of the greatest silent films of all time.

A movie distribution company has pulled the plug on the free, outdoor movies in Liberty.
The agency hosting the shows abruptly canceled the program this week after recently finding out it might be breaking copyright law by screening movies without a license.

“We don’t want to expose our library to potential legal action,” said Heinrich Strauch, the CDC’s executive director.

Every Saturday since Memorial Day, the Liberty Community Development Corp. has shown a movie at LaPolt park. The CDC has a folding screen and a DVD player, which it put on the stage. More than 100 people came to the first movie. The CDC held five shows in total, recent movies that were loaned from the library, like “Alice in Wonderland” and the animated picture “Up.”

Problem is that major movie studios, like Walt Disney and Paramount, have granted Swank Motion Pictures Inc., a St. Louis-based company, the exclusive rights to distribute movies for outdoor shows.
Theoretically without licensing, any person could buy a movie screen and a DVD player and then charge people to watch movies, and make a bundle.

Last summer, the CDC did get a license from Swank to show classics at LaPolt. These cost $150 for each screening.

This year, the CDC wanted to expand its program and show recently released movies, which cost around $300. Strauch estimated it would cost $3,000 to $4,000 to show movies through September. But he thought he had found away around it.

The Ramapo Catskill Library System has a license to show movies indoors. Strauch thought that if the library supplied the movies, he’d be covered by its license. And since the event was free and there’s no movie theater near the village that might lose customers, nobody would make a big deal out of it.

Swank is, however, aggressive about protecting its rights. A company representative in the New York office left a message with him and then called the library system, threatening legal action.

Strauch said he’s going to have to find businesses willing to sponsor the movies. He hasn’t had time to do that. So the shows are off for now.

“I find it odd that there is only one provider of outdoor movies,” Strauch said. “I think we have found the last cartel in America.”

In the 1950s, Ralph Peterson of Ann Arbor, associate professor at Eastern Michigan University, proved the timeliness of individualized instruction in a rural setting with his novel and popular outdoor motion picture shows in Washtenaw County’s small communities.

Shop Local for the holidays

50% off all GiftBasket Pre-Orders

Great gifts for half the price »

Located in the rear of Maxon Plaza on Washtenaw near Gene Butman Ford.

The Perfect Gift for any Occasion!

This unique venue was a theater under the stars as Peterson magically converted a schoolyard, village square (see above photo of the Village Green, Dixboro), a vacant lot or a cow pasture into the expanse of an outdoor movie house.

At the peak of the summer, the schedule would include feature film presentations in 20-25 different communities per week with an excess of 100 residents at each show.

“Television was still a new-fangled invention to most people,” recalled William Thornton, a friend who assisted Peterson in staging the shows, “Motion pictures remained a popular form of entertainment.”

Peterson and his crew – including his son Duane – became the popular showmen of the county. It was a special evening for the homefolk to gather and watch the giants of Hollywood perform on film. Peterson’s tools of production included a 16mm projector and an ingenious, homemade movie screen familiar to most as a bed sheet! Why, the film image of each movie star was as magnificant as the theater silver screen. Well, almost.

“I can visualize Ralph and I climbing these tall ladders, balancing somewhat precariously, and stretching this large piece of fabric across the back wall of an one-room schoolhouse,” Thornton said, spreading his hands as he described their gymnastics. (see the above photo of the back wall of the Dixboro Schoolhouse)

At dusk, the parade of citizen ants filed into the grounds from all points, including most of the area farms. The evening shadows would soon obscure the assorted lawn chairs, blankets and picnic baskets. It was a lovely evening of family entertainment for adults and children of all ages.

“Remember, not only were there few television sets in homes, but the Internet had yet to be imagined as well as multi-screen, giant theaters,” commented Duane Peterson, who grew from an 8-year-old into a teenager of 17 over the period of the summer shows.

“At times I saw it only as a job, but I also remember the excitement and apprehension when the show was about to begin.”

What was the price of admission to the program? Surprisingly, no charge. “Dad had a good working relationship with many of the out-County country stores and gas stations. He would drop in a week prior to the show to ask for their support as a gesture of community spirit. He seldom walked away empty-handed,” Duane said.

Although each community had their favorites, “Westerns and romantic” films were generally the most popular. The celluloid performances included comedies and an assortment of film shorts.

“A back-to-back series of adventure films, a star biographical movie and/or cartoons seemed to hold the audience’s attention the best,” Duane recalled. He laughed, “The sound of the crickets were louder than our movie-goers who remained relatively quiet during the show. Of course, there was always a crying baby that needed to be comforted by its mother.”

Once Duane earned his driver’s license, Dad Peterson began to quietly pass the project-baton on to his son. As they say in tinsel-town, Duane soloed admirably.

“Now that I am older, Duane said, “I have some nostalgic feelings and pleasant memories of all the family togetherness.” All that was required to entertain the folks was a simple movie projector, some films, a white sheet and a dad and his son named Duane.

Crowds are increasing for Victoria Park’s summer outdoor movie series.

On Friday, an estimated 150 people showed up to watch “E.T.: the Extra-Terrestrial,” the beloved 1982 science fiction classic directed by Stephen Spielberg.

The turnout marked a 50 per cent increase over the previous week when “Mamma Mia!” kicked off the four mid-summer night movies the town is showing this year.

“It was out best turnout yet,” said Town of Truro Special events and culture co-ordinator Cathy von Kintzel.

“What was nice about this one is that there was a lot more children. There were whole families snuggled under blankets with their chairs and snacks and everything.”

Von Kintzel said that word is still spreading through the community about the series and that some people she talked to came out after hearing “what a success” the first week was.

This week’s movie is “The Water Horse,” a story about a lonely boy who finds an egg which hatches and grows into the legendary Loch Ness Monster.

“It’s really a sweet movie,” said von Kintzel. ” I’ve seen it three times.

“Watch the trailer on YouTube. You’ll be hooked.”

The series concludes Aug. 6 with “Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief” (PG).

Movies are free of charge and begin at dusk (approximately 9 p.m.) at the bandshell. Participants are reminded to bring their lawn chairs.

In the case of poor weather, movies will be shown on the following Sunday.

Hey kids! I wanted to share something special with you! Dana Point has something they do called Movies In The Park. It is exactly what it sounds like. You go out to Lantern Bay Park (which has an amazing view of the harbor by the way), hang out until the sun goes down and watch a movie! And it’s FREE!!! It is brought to you by the same folks who tried bringing Drive-In movies back to the OC Fairgrounds. (I’m still mad it never took off.)

I first did this 2 weeks ago. We watched Monsters Vs. Aliens. As you can guess by the movie, this is a very family-friendly atmosphere. Tonight they will be showing The Wizard of Oz. I’ll be there! Will you? Look for me and say hi!

Be sure to bring a nice big blanket and some picnic items! They have a snack bar where everything is $1 with all the proceeds going to charity. Also, if you get there early enough there are 2 fire pits. And please, if you are going to bring lawn chairs, please make sure they are not tall as a courtesy to the people around (behind) you.

I have also seen something for outdoor movies in Newport Beach on Saturday nights, but I don’t have much information on that. But feel free to check it out and if it’s awesome, let us know!

DLR Events presents 3 days of Outdoor Movies in the Park in the Peoples Park, Dun Laoghaire on Saturday June 5th, Sunday June 6th and Monday June 7th 2010.

Movies start at 3pm 5.30pm and 8.30pm daily. The series, which presents free screenings of popular classics and blockbuster movies, transforms the glorious Peoples Park into an outdoor cinema for the bank holiday weekend with an eclectic mix of animated movies, action adventures, popular comedies and all time favourites.

The backdrop for the giant movie screen will be the dramatic horizon of Dun Laoghaire harbour. Filmgoers can bring picnics and blankets for a great family day out. Popcorn and other treats will be available for purchase throughout the event and on Sunday, the hugely popular COCO Market will bring a delicious medley of ethnic fare and sweet and savoury cuisine.

All films are rated 15A or under.

Movie buffs, friends and families flocked to Outdoor Movies in the Park in 2008 and 2009 and enjoyed a great mix of movies from Madagascar to Some Like it Hot and Spiderman to Indiana Jones! The sun even seems to always make a guest appearance! Outdoor movies in the Park is now back by popular demand as part of the summer DLR Events programme.

JUST ADDED

DLR Events is delighted to announce that two award winning short films by director Conor Ferguson, can be seen viewed for free as part of Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council’s Outdoor Movies in the Park 2010. The films are presented courtesy of Park Films, Dalkey.

Atlantic, is a multi awarding winning short that tells a poignant and atmospheric tale of a lonely farmer passing his days, unaware of the letter that’s on its way from the woman he once loved. A letter that could change his life, if he gets to read it..

The Wednesdays is a funny, sad (and sometimes wobbly) tale about two pensioners who manage to re-ignite the love they’d almost forgotten about.Sometimes, when you’re in the autumn of your days, you’ll try anything just
to put a smile on your face again..

If you’d like to add a Seattle Outdoor Movies venue that we don’t have listed, tell us about it here!
