Free Seattle: Outdoor Movies
When I was a teenager, we’d get together at my friend’s house and set up a bedsheet and a projector to watch movies outside in the warm summer nights. Seattle one-ups this social event with free outdoor movies offered in nearly every neighborhood. Some are in parks and some in parking lots, but they’re always fun. Fremont Outdoor Movies even does what they call “Twisted Flicks”, which means they turn off the sound and have an improv crew come up with the dialogue. This usually results in a much better movie than the original. The season for outdoor summer movies usually starts at the very end of June or beginning of July and runs through August.
If you go: They’re usually free, but usually accept or suggest donations, which often go to a good cause. You can still get in for nothing, though. Also, it gets chilly once it gets dark, so dress in layers. Food is usually acceptable, as is creative seating, but there’s nothing worse than getting to the movie and having some bozo in a regular-height lawn chair in front of you. Bring the low sand chair or stadium chair-type seating. A good old fashioned picnic blanket does the trick, too.

My Northwest also has a list of neighborhood outdoor movies throughout the Seattle area.
Last year there was also Cinema on the Lawn in South Lake Union and Movies on the Pedestal downtown. Looks like they’re not there this year, but might be worth checking back in 2010.
