The IMAX film “Amazon” will have its San Diego premiere Thursday at the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center, 12 years after its original release.
Fleet spokeswoman Erin Burns said that the film’s arrival in San Diego was long-delayed because it didn’t screen well in a test back in 1997. But the film’s subject wasn’t the problem: The museum’s old dome theater was. First installed in 1973, the museum’s IMAX dome underwent a three-month renovation late last year to bring it up to date.
“We wanted to wait to bring it to our theater until after the dome renovation,” Burns said. “We tested it in ’97, but on the old screen, there was not enough light and the film felt too dark in color and contrast. Now, with the dome renovation, NanoSeam screen and a new lens on the IMAX projector, greater light, clarity and sharper colors present a film that looks better than ever.”
