London, UK: Free Outdoor Movie Screenings Across London

nullSummer’s here! What better way to celebrate than with outdoor film events across the capital? When it comes to outdoor film screenings, London has plenty to choose from. Grab a blanket and head outside to see movies in the open air.

The hugely popular BP summer screens are back again for 2009, bringing the best of opera and ballet to the capital. With the BP outdoor film events, cinema and film fans of all ages can experience loads of culture-packed performances. Taking place at Trafalgar Square and Canary Wharf, the film events for 2009 include Ondine, La Traviata and The Barber of Seville. Take a break from blockbuster movies and see some classic performances.

Returning for another year of outdoor film events, Somerset House is planning ten nights of the best in films for 2009. From classics like Westside Story to favourites like Alien, Poltergeist and Raiders of the Lost Ark to modern hits like Slumdog Millionaire, the Somerset House outdoor cinema events are a must for film fans of all ages.

The Scoop
Winding up a summer full of outdoor film events come The Scoop’s free film season located in The Scoop’s unique riverside amphitheatre. The nine films on view this year include The Wizard Of Oz, Mamma Mia, The Usual Suspects, Strictly Ballroom, O Brother Where Art Thou and, of course, Slumdog Millionaire – proving to be a very popular choice this summer.

Syon Park
Enjoy family friendly films and classics under the stars at Syon Park’s gardens this summer – pack a picnic beforehand for a complete summer film experience. This year’s events include screenings of Grease, Funny Face, Gold Finger and major box office hits like Slumdog Millionaire and Mamma Mia.

Shoreditch Festival
Looking for outdoor films that are a big less blockbuster and a bit more indie? Catch shorts and animation (including the old school Disney favourite Steamboat Willie) on Saturday 18th July at 2pm and 5pm. The 5pm screening will be accompanied by a live pianist. On Sunday 19th July the festival will be showcasing films made by young people from 1pm – 7pm.

Britflicks at the Britannia
The Britannia and the BFI are joining together to bring weird and wonderful British films to the capital, for free. Screened outdoors in The Britannia’s garden, the films are scheduled for every Thursday night from 18th June – 3rd September.

Dulwich Picture Gallery
Bring a picnic dinner and your spangliest Abba costume for Dulwich Picture Gallery’s singalong showing of Mamma Mia on Monday 31st August. The screening starts at 8pm and beforehand Push Studios will be demonstrating the dance scenes from the film. Tickets are £6 and grounds open at 7pm.

National Theatre
For four Fridays this summer the National Theatre will be projecting favourites from the BFI Archive onto the National Theatre Flytower. The free film screenings include Vanished London, which features three films about London through the past 50 years, and A Throw of Dice, an Indian silent film from 1929.
